A Guide to Formulation in Coaching: Elevating Professional Practice.
In A Guide to Formulation in Coaching, authors Lane, Corrie, and Kovacs provide a foundational text for practitioners wishing to improve their practice through the rigorous use of formulation.
The core of this work introduces the 4P Framework, which guides coaches through the essential pillars of Positionality, Purpose, Perspectives, and Process. This structured approach allows coaches to examine a client's narrative from individual, interpersonal, and systemic viewpoints. Rather than offering a rigid formula, the book provides a series of exercises to enable readers to refine their own individual approaches and adapt their formulations to respond to different worldviews.
A randomised controlled comparison of the effectiveness of human and AI chatbot coaching with goal attainment, wellbeing and self-efficacy.
Human vs. AI Chatbot Coaching
In this edition, we examine a groundbreaking study recently published in Human Resource Development International by Erik de Haan and colleagues. This randomized controlled trial directly compares the effectiveness of human executive coaching with AI chatbot coaching by measuring outcomes such as goal attainment, wellbeing, and self efficacy. As digital coaching platforms attempt to democratize and expand coaching services, this research addresses the critical question of whether AI can truly augment or replace the traditional face to face interaction.
The study findings emphasize a co-regulation model which suggests that the most successful coaching outcomes are deeply rooted in the mutual influence and relationship between a coach and coachee. While AI tools were found to be accessible and cost effective, the research demonstrated that substantial effectiveness across diverse coaching outcomes was primarily observed in human coaching. These results suggest that while AI can support specific tasks, the human touch remains essential for navigating complex professional and personal transitions.
At The Positivity Institute, we believe this research highlights the enduring value of the human connection in fostering true flourishing. By recognizing the unique strengths of human coaches, such as building a strong working alliance and supporting deep reflection, we can better design leadership environments that prioritize holistic health. This study serves as a vital reminder that while technology can enhance accessibility, professional success and personal wellbeing are most effectively nurtured through authentic human partnership.
World Health Day: A Global Commitment to Wellbeing
World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, serves as a global reminder that health is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of a flourishing society. Established by the World Health Organization, this day focuses on the urgent need to ensure that every individual has access to the resources and support required to achieve their highest possible level of health. It encourages a shift from reactive care to a proactive, holistic approach that addresses both physical vitality and psychological resilience. We recognise that true health involves more than the absence of illness; it is the presence of the psychological factors that allow people to thrive. By focusing on the "art of living," we can design leadership and personal environments that support sustainable wellbeing. This World Health Day, we invite our community to prioritise the eudaimonic practices that foster long term vitality and ensure that our professional success is built on a foundation of personal health.
World Creativity and Innovation Day
